Ferret Catching Protocol

Ferrets may be rare in our area, but we are seeing an increase in ferret catches which is posing a huge threat to our environment, including the Coromandel Brown kiwi population.

Did you know that ferrets are one of the few introduced predators that can kill adult kiwi? We must act fast to protect precious wildlife! If you trap a ferret, please follow these steps:

  1. Bag the ferret up

  2. Store the remains in the freezer

  3. Complete the Ferret Catch Record Form

  4. Deliver or courier the form and frozen ferret to DOC, Whitianga Base

Let's work together to keep track of ferrets' movements across the peninsula and analyse the specimens for further information. Please contact us if you have any questions about ferrets in our area. Remember, protecting precious taonga is a community effort!
