A new partnership has been established to focus on the recovery of Matuku-Hūrepo in the Hauraki Coromandel region. Many of the resources provided have been developed by this action group that includes Predator Free Hauraki Coromandel (Jude Hooson), the Bittern Conservation Trust (Paul Johnson), the Department of Conservation (Ben Gordon and Ken Brown), and Waikato Regional Council (Andrew Thomas and Elaine Iddon) and local ecologist, Hamish Kendal.

An adaptive management planning tool to help landowners, communities and others to contribute to the recovery of Matuku-Hūrepo (Australasian bitterns) in the Hauraki Coromandel.

Regionwide Surveys
In 2023 a baseline survey was conducted by local volunteers which included 29 monitoring sites. The intention is that this region-wide survey will be repeated annually to track population distribution.
