Projects
We work across a range of projects to better connect, amplify, and support those in the predator free movement in our region. Our funders make it possible to create tangible outcomes for the Hauraki Coromandel biodiversity and community, and we look forward to expanding our projects and impact into the future.
Kiwi at Home - Kiwi i te Kāinga
The Kiwi at Home - Kiwi i te Kāinga project aims to increase the rate of kiwi recovery across the Coromandel Peninsula. This will be achieved through bringing together well-established community-led kiwi care groups, iwi, and agencies with a focus on fostering inclusive, transparent, and enduring relationships. This is an innovative project, which will see significant gains being made for local kiwi populations, through working collaboratively to improve, expand, connect and increase the safe spaces where kiwi live, in a strategic and sustainable way across the region.
DOC Community Conservation Hub
This project aims to address community conservation groups needs through a Communications Programme to build the volunteer base, and a Connectivity Programme to build knowledge and expertise.
We are working with Hauraki Coromandel community conservation groups and leaders to tell their unique stories through a multi-media campaign. Building awareness, profile and a call to action to increase the pool of available conservation volunteers. We are also building the connectivity and networking between groups and individuals to advance knowledge and build capability and resilience. Celebrating the biodiversity actions and outcomes.
Field Support Team
Our Field Support Team (FST) has been launched and is actively providing practical assistance to not only community-based conservation groups on the Hauraki-Coromandel, but also start-up groups in urban centres, and supporting an alliance with Destination Coromandel and tourism operators.
The FST is composed of a Field Supervisor and two field cadets, (backed by central services and admin support) that provide the capabilities and resources they need. They will help grow capacity and capability across the 60+ groups on the Coromandel encouraging networking within and between groups, which will help develop synergies within their communities. Under the supervision of an experienced field operative, the cadets develop practical skills and competencies ‘on the job’ whilst providing to the needs of community groups ‘on the ground’. Profiles of the current team can be found here.
We are also looking to make a social, economic and cultural contribution through this programme - providing skills training to youth, opportunities for rangitahi - if desired, opportunities for ‘transition to work’ programmes etc. The programme will be supported by central services/events within PFHCCT and provide cross-over support to other funded programmes eg. Kiwi i te Kainga programme.
